Tóm tắt

Vietnam has experienced tremendous economic growth over the last three decades by virtue of its governmental commitment to further expanding global trade. Therefore, developing international business relationships in Vietnam via the gateway of learning the host country language has become vitally important for expatriates. Through document analysis and meta-analysis, this paper is to suggest a research model in which the willingness to study Vietnamese for Business Communication (VBC) to expatriates living and doing business in Vietnam is projected to positively influence international business relationship development. The research model also proposed that the awareness of Hofstede’s dimensions of national culture plays a mediating role in the positive relationship between the three variables: willingness to learn and use VBC; the establishment of interpersonal relationship; and the development of international business relationship. The cultural dimensions investigated in relation to the variables included individualsim-collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity-femininity and long-term orientation (or Confucian dynamicism). This model, then, encourages business expatriates to learn and use Vietnamese in their attempt to establish international business relationships in Vietnam.
