Scientific research plays an important role for students in general and students of the Academy of Ethnology in particular. Scientific research activities help students practice many skills such as teamwork, problem identification, report writing and presentation, creativity and adaptability to the modern working environment. With the desire to improve scientific research activities for students of Vietnam Academy for Ethnic Minorities, by means of a survey of 15 lecturers and 60 students; in-depth interviews, retrospective documents... the article clarifies the current status of scientific research of students of Vietnam Academy for Ethnic Minorities such as students' awareness of the importance of improving scientific research competence, the rate of students participating in scientific research activities; the current status of using teaching methods towards improving scientific research competence in the scientific research methodology course... thereby laying a scientific basis for solutions contributing to improving scientific research competence for students of Vietnam Academy for Ethnic Minorities.
