In the minds of the Vietnamese people, water means are also people, companions, contributing to the formation of human personality and destiny; at the same time, they are also containers, living spaces, and means of livelihood. The article is based on the theory of cultural categories, an important aspect of Cultural Linguistics to approach the class of words indicating water means in Southern folk verses. The category of water means reflects a detailed and in-depth classification method, clearly showing the cognitive characteristics and cultural picture of the Vietnamese Southerners. At the same time, the means associated with water also show the characteristics of coexistence, language interference and cultures of ethnic groups in the region. The research results contribute to strengthening the applicability of the theory of cultural categories to the analysis of specific linguistic phenomena, especially analyzing the relationship among the three components: language - culture - thinking.
