Community engagement has become one of the three key pillars of higher education, alongside teaching and scientific research. In developed countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Germany, this activity is considered a professional responsibility of faculty members and a core component of universities' missions. Through models such as servicelearning, applied research, and community partnerships, faculty members play a crucial role in addressing societal challenges. However, in Vietnam, despite legal provisions acknowledging community engagement, implementation remains limited due to a lack of supportive policies, the absence of clear evaluation criteria in faculty promotion systems, and resource constraints. This study suggests that Vietnam should learn from developed countries by establishing a well-defined policy framework, incentivizing faculty participation, and strengthening the connection between universities and communities. Enhancing community engagement in higher education not only improves academic quality but also contributes to sustainable social development.
