Teaching English to non-English majors at university has been of interest to many educational researchers, including experts in foreign language teaching and learning. Not all students quickly grasp theoretical knowledge and complete practical exercises with a high percentage of correct answers. A class can have students of different levels. Therefore, assigning exercises to students according to their competences is equally important, helping them learn at their own pace. This article explores related theories and evaluates the effectiveness of assigning exercises to non-English majors according to their abilities throughout a semester at university. The main method used for the study was classroom observation and regular assessment of student progress through lessons, oral test and mid-term test. The results of the study showed that when non-English majors were given exercises according to their abilities, they felt less pressured and were more comfortable expressing themselves in class. They were attached to their lecturer and class, wanted to come to class every week and were open to talking to their lecturer and classmates. Therefore, the students' learning outcomes gradually improved over the weeks.
