The digital transformation of higher education and the growing emphasis on competency-based training have encouraged institutions to adopt innovative teaching approaches, including Virtual Reality (VR) simulation for practiceoriented disciplines such as social work. This article reviews international studies and relevant Vietnamese educational policies to clarify the conceptual foundations of VR simulation, examine current approaches and implementation models in social work education, and assess their pedagogical effectiveness. The findings indicate that VR simulations enhance students’ communication, assessment, and intervention skills, while also strengthening reflective capacity and professional confidence. Based on these insights, the article proposes a phased and context-sensitive model for integrating VR into social work training in Vietnam, aligned with existing infrastructure, faculty readiness, and the national competency development agenda. Virtual reality simulation is opening up a potential approach to innovating social work training methods, especially in the context of Vietnamese higher education gradually shifting towards competency-based development and increased application of digital technology.
