The rapid development of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and media platforms is transforming the security environment in the twenty first century. In this context, cyberspace is increasingly becoming a “cognitive battlespace” where information and digital technologies are used to influence perception and social behavior. This study employs document analysis, policy analysis, and interdisciplinary theoretical synthesis to examine the implications of this transformation for national defense and security education in higher education. The findings show that the “cognitive battlespace” expands security challenges from the physical domain to the information and cognitive domains, creating new requirements for national defense and security education. Based on these findings, the study proposes the concept of “digital security cognitive competence”, including the ability to identify, verify, analyze, critically evaluate, and appropriately respond to cognitive threats in digital environments. The paper orients the integration of digital security content and its impact on awareness into national defense and security education programs, while identifying the proposed “digital awareness shield” as a result of developing “digital security awareness capabilities” for students in the context of current digital transformation.
