Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used by school students, yet empirical evidence on its utilization by Vietnamese Grade 12 students for high-stakes examination preparation remains sparse. This descriptive survey examined the frequency and forms of students’ AI use, the tools, subjects and learning purposes involved, as well as their verification practices, concerns and guidance needs. Of the 115 students invited to participate, 98 provided valid responses for analysis. All valid respondents reported having used AI for learning or examination preparation. Smartphones were the primary access device, while ChatGPT and Google Gemini were the most commonly used tools. AI was used mainly in Mathematics, Literature and English, particularly to explain difficult content, solve exercises, summarise lessons and analyse mistakes. Overall, 78.6% of students reported checking AI-generated responses against other sources or using them only as suggestions before completing the tasks themselves. In the open-ended responses, inaccurate information was the most frequently reported concern. The findings suggest that schools should provide structured guidance on effective prompting, source verification and responsible AI use to ensure that AI supports rather than replaces students’ independent thinking.
