Vietnam is entering a period of rapid population aging, with an increasing number of elderly people living in centralized care facilities, creating an urgent need for scientific evidence to support the training of caregiving and social work personnel. A cross-sectional study of 372 older adults (≥60 years) in public (n=71) and private (n=301) long-term care (LTC) facilities in Hanoi, Vietnam assessed functional dependence (Barthel ADL Index), psychological distress (DASS-21: depression, anxiety, stress), and cognitive function (MMSE). Results: 39.2% had severe/complete ADL dependence; depression, anxiety, stress, and moderate-to-severe cognitive impairment prevalence was 57.5%, 79.6%, 52.4%, and 44.5%, respectively. Barthel scores correlated inversely with depression (rs=−0.537), anxiety (rs=−0.606), and stress (rs=−0.484), and positively with MMSE (rs=0.337; all p<0.001). ADL dependence was the strongest independent predictor of depression (aOR=6.75, 95% CI: 3.57 - 12.74). Findings support social work curriculum reform: graduates need ADL assessment, mental health screening, and integrated psychosocial intervention competencies for LTC settings.
