Tóm tắt

The development of large language models offers the potential to personalize the learning process; however, quantitative evidence regarding the use of this technology as a learning scaffold in high school chemistry education in Vietnam remains limited. This study developed the AI-Chem system, which integrates custom ”Gems” based on the Gemini platform using the Socratic method, to support Grade 11 chemistry review through step-by-step questions and hints. A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was employed over a 12-week period involving two Grade 11 classes at Quoc Hoc Hue Gifted High School (Thuan Hoa Ward, Hue City); the experimental group used AI-Chem for self-study, while the control group followed conventional study methods. Preliminary results demonstrate AI-Chem’s potential to support review and personalize feedback in Grade 11 chemistry instruction. However, due to the small sample size, the non-equivalence of the groups, and certain uncontrolled confounding factors, the results are insufficient to establish a causal relationship. Consequently, future research should expand the sample size, improve the control of confounding variables, and analyze interaction data to better evaluate the effectiveness of the Socratic approach.
