Tóm tắt

This study investigated the current status of counseling skills among psychology students through three indicator domains: professional knowledge, professional attitudes, and counseling skill performance, while also examining the use of scenario-based simulation in counselor education. A mixed-methods design was employed with 108 psychology students at Hanoi Metropolitan University, integrating questionnaire surveys and interviews. The findings revealed that students demonstrated relatively positive levels of professional knowledge (M = 3.65) and professional attitudes (M = 3.55), whereas counseling skill performance was comparatively limited (M = 3.18), particularly in questioning, emotional responding, and managing challenging counseling situations. Students generally perceived scenario-based simulation positively (M = 3.78); however, its implementation was constrained by insufficient frequency, limited diversity of simulation scenarios, and a lack of systematic integration into the training process. Based on these findings, the study proposes three directions for enhancing counseling skills training through simulation: strengthening structured practice accompanied by feedback and reflective debriefing, improving the authenticity of simulation activities, and progressively exploring the integration of technology-assisted simulation into counselor education. The research results provide a practical basis for proposing directions for developing counseling skills through simulation, suitable for current training conditions.
