Tóm tắt

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects children’s social communication, behavior, and adaptive functioning. In addition to the challenges of caring for and supporting children with ASD, parents often face pressure from their social environment, particularly stigma and misunderstanding from the community. This study surveyed 98 parents of children with ASD receiving intervention services at four intervention centers in Hanoi, Vietnam. Data were collected using the Affiliate Stigma Scale, a five-point frequency scale scored from 0 to 4, and supplemented with in-depth interviews with eight parents. The findings indicated that parents experienced affiliate stigma at a level ranging from occasional to frequent. The most prominent manifestations included feelings of shame or reluctance to disclose their child’s condition and concerns about being judged by others. The analysis also showed that parents’ religious status and the severity of the child’s ASD, as reported by the parents, were significantly associated with the level of affiliate stigma experienced. These findings contribute to the growing body of evidence on affiliate stigma among families of children with ASD in the Vietnamese context and highlight the need for psychosocial support programs and greater public awareness to reduce stigma toward parents and families of children with ASD.
