This article analyzes the current situation of career guidance and the role of the family in career guidance among high school students in Son La province. The study uses a mixed methodology, combining a questionnaire survey of 366 students at four high schools with in-depth interviews and focus group discussions to clarify the role of the family in the career guidance process. The research results show that 79.4% of students choose their careers based on personal passions and interests, while 19.2% choose based on their parents' wishes. Although the internet is the most frequently used source of information for career guidance (66.8%), the family remains a crucial source of support (62.4%) through counseling, sharing experiences, guidance, and support in the decision-making process. The results of in-depth interviews showed that students tend to reconcile their personal aspirations with family expectations through discussion, persuasion, and seeking consensus, rather than confronting or abandoning their own desires. This research contributes to empirical research on the role of families in career guidance for high school students in a multi-ethnic mountainous province, while also providing a practical basis for strengthening coordination between families, schools, and social forces to improve the effectiveness of career guidance in the locality.
