Tóm tắt

This study aimed to examine the relationship between emotional self-control skills and aggressive behavior and to determine the statistical predictive value of emotional self-control skills for aggressive behavior among high school students. A cross-sectional design and convenience sampling method were employed in 2025 with 707 students in Grades 10, 11, and 12 from four high schools in Ho Chi Minh City. Data were collected using the Emotional Self-Control Skills Scale developed by the authors and the Vietnamese version of the Reactive–Proactive Aggression Questionnaire developed by Raine et al. (2006). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation, and linear regression. The results indicated that emotional self-control skills were moderately and negatively correlated with aggressive behavior (r=−0.368, p<0.001) and explained 13.5% of the variance in aggressive behavior within the study sample (R2=0.135). When the three components were examined simultaneously, the model explained 17.2% of the variance, with emotional control showing the largest standardized regression coefficient (β=−0.333, p<0.001). The model comprising the three components explained 23.6% of the variance in reactive aggression and 7.3% of the variance in proactive aggression. Thus, the proportion of variance explained in the sample was higher for reactive aggression; however, the study did not directly test the statistical significance of the difference between the two models. The findings provide additional evidence of the relationship between emotional self-control skills and aggressive behavior and offer a basis for emotional education and aggression-prevention activities in schools.
