Tóm tắt
It is common knowledge that cultural traits reside behind language in use. So understandings of the relationships between language and culture are essential for teaching and learning English as a foreign language and for using English as a means of communication. One of the most prominent features inherent in discourse is politeness. This article is a review paper on how different politeness strategies are adhered to in collectivist and individualist cultures. The information conveyed in this article, to the possible extent, can be seen as useful for English language teaching and learning, for translation, for verbal and nonverbal interpersonal communication among users of English from different cultures.
