Tóm tắt

Reading is an important skill that contributes to developing language competency of foreign language learners. Learners who aim for proficient reading skills need to read extensively and know how to read appropriately and effectively. However, nowadays, learners read less and less and gradually lose the habit of reading books. This paper analyzes the theoretical basis of the extensive reading technique and examines the reading habits and attitudes of students when integrating English extensive reading into the reading course for first-year university students majoring in English language at Hanoi Metropolitan University based on 3 steps. The results show that extensive reading encourages learners to read more, enhances their motivation to read, and thereby forming a habit of reading outside the classroom. This study is the basis for further studies on applying and improving the quality of extensive reading in the curriculum to help students change their attitudes and reading habits in general and in foreign language learning in particular.
