Tóm tắt

The 2018 English general education curriculum encourages communicative teaching, but its application in primary schools, especially in the Mekong Delta, still faces many challenges. Many lessons lack effective communicative activities, limiting students' opportunities to practice the language. This study assessed the communicative level of teaching activities used in English classes in primary schools in a Mekong Delta province, based on the 2018 English general education curriculum. Data were collected from 27 lessons taught by 9 teachers using the English 3 and 4 textbooks (Global Success). The results according to Littlewood's (2004, 2011) communicative level assessment method showed that activities with a high communicative level were very limited, while the majority were at a low or non-communicative level. Although high-communicative activities are recommended to develop students’ communicative competence, their selection depends on the age, content of the lesson and the level of the students. The study highlights the need to balance communicative activities in primary English classrooms. This requires teachers to enhance their awareness and capacity through intensive training programs, support in designing and implementing effective communicative activities, and equip themselves with teaching techniques that focus on communicative goals.
