Student volunteering not only demonstrates social responsibility but is also an important means to contribute to the development of personal competence, career and civic qualities in the context of Vietnamese higher education. This article analyzes the forms and purposes of student volunteering in Vietnam through a survey of 26,331 students at public and non-public colleges and universities in some regions in Vietnam. The results show that students mainly participate in summer volunteering, environmental protection, fundraising and charity activities; in which, public school and college students have a higher frequency of participation. In terms of purpose, the main motivating factors are the opportunity to practice skills, express oneself, apply knowledge and practice social responsibility; while the motivation of “following the trend” is less common. The statistically significant differences between demographic groups show that volunteering is simultaneously influenced by gender, educational environment and training characteristics. The study is the basis for suggesting directions for developing appropriate educational programs and support policies to promote volunteering participation in higher education.
