Tóm tắt

In the context of foreign language teaching at the university level, which increasingly emphasizes communicative competence, speaking tasks that can promote student participation and support the development of speaking skills are receiving attention. This paper surveys the perceptions of English Language students at two universities in Ho Chi Minh City regarding storytelling activities, and examines the impact of this activity on the components of speaking competence. The results show that students highly value storytelling, especially in its ability to increase self-confidence and classroom participation. Qualitative data reflects that identifying narrative purpose and paying attention to the listener helps learners organize content, choose expressions, and present ideas more clearly. Based on this, the study contributes to clarifying the role of storytelling as a communicative task in teaching speaking, and suggests the possibility of applying this activity to enhance learning interest and support the development of important aspects of speaking competence in foreign language training at the university level.
