Teaching oriented towards competence development is an educational trend in the world and in Vietnam. For the Music industry, teaching oriented towards competence development will form learners' general competences, professional competences, methodological competences and social competences. Music Theory for Intermediate students at Hanoi College of Arts is one of the important subjects, with fundamental knowledge of music; simply using traditional teaching methods in this subject has not brought the desired results. This article proposes some measures and conditions to implement teaching Music Theory in the direction of developing competence for intermediate students at Hanoi College of Arts, helping them master the background knowledge of music while developing creative abilities and thinking, which can be applied effectively and practically to other subjects. This is established on the basis of school's training goals and tasks.
