Probability is a fundamental mathematical branch with extensive practical applications. The 2018 Vietnamese mathematics curriculum for the secondary school level underscores probability and statistics by augmenting their content and instructional time in the teaching syllabus. However, an in-depth analysis of the curriculum and textbooks reveals that the classical approach to probability holds a central and dominant status in both textbooks and teaching practices. The connection between the classical and frequentist approaches in teaching high school probability remains limited. In this study, we examined 11th-grade students' ability to link these two approaches when solving probability problems. The preliminary findings confirm that the classical approach is predominant among most students, while the connection between the classical and frequentist approaches is rarely observed during problem-solving. These results highlight the need to promote the frequentist approach and its connection to the classical approach in teaching high school probability.
