In the context of fundamental and comprehensive reform in education and training, together with the growing demand to enhance the quality of human resources for national development, university lecturers play a pivotal role in fulfilling the missions of teaching, scientific research, and community service. Beyond tangible factors such as curricula, facilities, and remuneration policies, intangible factors-particularly academic culture-are increasingly recognized as a crucial foundation for fostering the development of lecturers’ professional competence. This article adopts a narrative review approach to examine both international and domestic studies on academic culture, clarifying its concepts, structures, and major theoretical approaches, while analyzing the role of academic culture in educational quality and the development of professional competence among university lecturers. On this basis, the article identifies existing research gaps, especially the lack of empirical studies in the context of Vietnamese higher education, thereby underscoring the urgency of investigating the role of academic culture in promoting lecturers’ professional competence in the current period.
