This study aims to identify the factors influencing the digital competence (DC) of students at the VNU University of Education, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in the context of digital transformation in higher education. Data were collected from 464 students using a standardized questionnaire and analyzed using quantitative techniques, including exploratory factor analysis (EFA), Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression. The results indicate that four factors positively predict students’ digital competence: individual characteristics (β = 0.222), access to and experience with technology (β = 0.290), the educational environment (β = 0.396), and the socio-economic context (β = 0.241). Among these, the educational environment is the strongest predictor, whereas individual characteristics have the weakest predictive effect. Based on these findings, the study proposes several policy implications, including enhancing the learning environment at higher education institutions, improving technological infrastructure and access, and encouraging students’ proactive engagement in developing their digital skills. The findings contribute empirical evidence to the body of knowledge on digital competence while providing practical insights for higher education institutions in designing effective digital transformation strategies.
