Sustainable development has become an indispensable trend and urgent need of every country in the world. The content of the concept “sustainable development” includes not only nature conservation activities to ensure ecological sustainability, but also cultural, social and economic sustainability because human is the center of development. In order to implement sustainable development programs, it is necessary to radically and comprehensively change, from institutions, technology to people's lifestyles. These changes can only be made on the basis of education, in which higher education plays a key role. This study shows that, higher education institutions play important role in the implementation of sustainable development goals, such as the goal of hunger eradication and poverty reduction, the goal of ensuring a healthy life and improving human well-being, the goal on gender equality, the goal on employment and economic growth … This article reviews the role of higher education in the world of sustainable development, then clarifying the necessity of the transition from higher education to sustainable higher education in the implementation of sustainable development programs in every country.
