Pedagogy is a discipline that studies education, with the aim to improve the quality of teacher training and ensure the effectiveness of pedagogical practice. In Vietnam, pedagogy is an externally-originated science which was introduced into Vietnam during the process of acculturation of French and Vietnamese education. During the French colonial period, pedagogy was introduced into Vietnam for the purpose of training of native teachers and improving the quality of indigenous education. The article analyzes the context of the formation of pedagogical education and the process of setting up educational courses in the curricula at pedagogical schools in Vietnam during the colonial period.
