The selection of text in teaching as well as assessment of reading comprehension capacity is an important stage, contributing to improving the teaching efficiency and quality of assessment. Currently, the selection of documents in our country is still challenging due to a lack of a complete and suitable set of criteria for selecting text. This study summarizes experience in New Zealand’s educational programme including the concept of text, text selection criteria (requirements for form, type of text, text features and difficulty of text). The results showed that the choice of text in New Zealand’s assessment or teaching was carried out very meticulously, highly scientifically and clearly defined in the program and competency standards. The results of the study will be a reference to help teachers and test item writers assess students’ reading skills in teaching and evaluation process.
