In today's interconnected world, English holds a crucial role across various aspects of life, necessitating a fresh approach to its teaching and learning. Instead of rigidly adhering to Inner Circle countries' English as the only standard, a more inclusive approach encompassing diverse English variants and local contexts should be adopted within classroom settings. Employing the sociolinguistic checklist developed by Atar & Erdem (2020), this study examined the “Friends Global” English textbook for 10th-grade students in Vietnam. Its objective was to assess whether the textbook adequately addresses the sociolinguistic criteria in enhancing Vietnamese learners' proficiency in English intercultural communicative competence, aligning with contemporary linguistic demands. However, the textbook falls short in meeting all six criteria, neglecting non-native English variants, accent diversity, and adequate bilingual proficiency examples. It predominantly emphasizes “Inner Circle” cultures, disregarding Vietnam's cultural diversity and students' language ecosystems. In conclusion, revisions are imperative to accurately represent the linguistic and cultural richness of students' realities.
