Innovation in competence assessment in general and innovation in test design in particular is one of the important links in the innovation of the 2018 General Education Curriculum in Vietnam. For History, building assessment tests based on materials sources is a principled approach based on the characteristics of the subject. In countries with advanced education such as the US, for many decades, the design of History assessment tests has always been based on reliable and diverse data sources. However, in Vietnam, this approach is still a big gap in both research and practical implementation. Based on theoretical research methods, case studies and comparative research, this article analyzes the characteristics and advantages of the question format based on visual materials in the AP History exam (US) and suggests applications for innovation in History assessment tests in Vietnam.
