This article uses the language contrastive analysis theory to compare the Vietnamese and Chinese tones to identify possible advantages and disadvantages in learning Vietnamese pronunciation for the learners who are native speakers of Chinese. The comparison also provides reference teaching materials for language teachers. The subjects of the comparison are as follows: the quantity of tones, the pitch and contour of the tones, pronunciation length, and pronunciation method. This article shows that the Vietnamese and Chinese languages share four tones whose tonal contours are similar: flat, rising, broken, and falling. Their rising tones are exactly the same, but the falling tones including the broken tone and the flat tone which are different at pitch, timing, and the pronunciation method.
