The self-directed learning model is considered an effective approach, helping students to be proactive, flexible, and creative in the scientific research process, aiming to promote critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and lifelong learning. A survey of the factors influencing the development of scientific research capacity among students at the International School of Hanoi and the International University of Ho Chi Minh City reveals that, among the 12 factors influencing the development of scientific research capacity for students under the self-directed learning model, the learning environment created by lecturers and the students' research skills are the two most influential factors. The research results confirm that developing scientific research capacity for students according to the self-directed learning model requires a harmonious combination of individuals and environmental factors. This suggests that higher education institutions need to design flexible training programs that foster student initiative in research.
