Speaking skill, as an integral part of any EFL programme, is considered a determinant to assess the learners’ command of a foreign language. At the University of Economics and Business Administration - Thai Nguyen University, the students often do not actively participate in learning activities in English classes, especially in speaking lessons. This action research was conducted during 8 weeks with 45 2nd-year students to explore how the collaborative learning activities influenced their English speaking skills and found out the students’ attitudes to these collaborative activities. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method and collected the data through pre- and post-tests, survey questionnaires and interviews. The results showed that the application of collaborative learning activities not only helped to improve student’s English speaking skills but also got the students actively and regularly engaged in English lessons.
