Online learning is becoming more and more popular in higher education in the context of ever-evolving engineering and technology, especially following the Covid-19 pandemic. Determining the standard of core competencies that lecturers at higher education institutions should master to successfully conduct online teaching is essential for the training and fostering their online teaching capacity, as well as to evaluate the quality of online teaching at higher education institutions. Using the method of literature review, analyzing the previous proposals on online teaching competencies of many studies in the world, identifying the common points mentioned by many authors, detecting the gaps in the theories to supplement and enrich existing literature, combined with analyzing the characteristics of online teaching in higher education, the article proposes the standard set of lecturers’ core competencies in online teaching. This standard set includes eight groups of competencies with specific behavioral criteria for each competency. This proposal could be a reference tool, promoting further studies on training and fostering the online teaching competence of lecturers at higher education institutions.
