Academic writing often requires the writer to consider various factors during the writing process. This is a challenge for English Language students, due to the requirements of English academic writing as well as the differences between English and Vietnamese. This study aims to examine the perceptions of first-year English majors at Hanoi University about how to write academic English paragraphs and the difficulties they face in the writing process. The research results show that the difficulties that the students encountered when practicing paragraph writing skills mainly stemmed from limited vocabulary and struggles in constructing explanatory sentences. Some useful tools such as Quizlet and Grammarly are proposed to effectively support learners in learning to write academic English paragraphs.
