National Defense and Security Education (NDSE) is a compulsory component of the general education curriculum, aiming to foster students’ awareness and responsibility in safeguarding the Fatherland. However, its quality depends largely on the management of this activity by stakeholders in high schools. Therefore, this article focuses on clarifying several theoretical issues such as the concept, characteristics, and content of management. Based on this foundation, a survey and analysis of the current situation were conducted to identify the causes of limitations and provide grounds for adjustments to improve the effectiveness of NDSE for students in high schools in Dong Thap Province. The survey results show that the management of NDSE activities for students in high schools in Cao Lanh City is currently at a fairly good level. Nevertheless, some shortcomings remain, including: a number of administrators and teachers not fully recognizing the role of NDSE; educational planning that is still formalistic; organizational and directive activities lacking systematic implementation; extracurricular education and practical training not being sufficiently invested in; and assessment content that is not comprehensive, especially regarding practical skills. Therefore, if high school managers in the area clearly identify these limitations and promptly make adjustments, the quality of NDSE for students will be enhanced, thereby contributing to the fulfillment of future national defense requirements.
