Writing is considered the most crucial skill that must be taught to engage students in the meaningful language learning process. With a view to improving the writing achievement, some paraphrasing strategies and paraphrasing practice activities are applied to help students to internalize information of the original text to avoid replication of the vast majority of the original texts or use the words repeatedly. It helps students improve writing achievement and feel confident in academic writing. The article conducts a survey to analyze students’ competence in paraphrasing IELTS tests based on Leonhard’s paraphrasing rubric (2002) and identify problems in students’ paraphrasing based on the theory of Kennedy & Smith (1986) to improve the student’s achievement and enjoyment in writing tasks. Paraphrasing is actually a challenging skill for most students since paraphrasing competence is in accordance with vocabulary, grammatical mastery and knowledge about paraphrasing, so students’ competence and problems in paraphrasing should be a focus issue to be solved. The article also suggests using the combination of conventional and some online paraphrasing strategies and activities to rewrite words, sentences and paragraphs effectively to improve students’ writing achievement during the learning process.
