Innovation of governance at higher education institutions means improving the quality and effectiveness of training, ensuring social justice on the basis of promoting the autonomy and accountability of the university. Higher education institutions need to pay special attention to shaping their mission, vision and strategies, and goals in their governance and management. Much attention should be paid to the organization of an effective management apparatus, financial issues, management mechanisms, operational control and effective resource allocation and use. New “products” created in the university through training and research can meet the needs of the market. In this article, the authors present an overall review on university governance; clarify a number of issues of university governance, the current situation of university governance mechanisms and guideline documents related to university governance, etc. Accordingly, the article offers “some solutions” to innovating university governance in Vietnam today, in order to promote the quality of university education now and in the future.
